Continuing West....Fort Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt NP and Medora, North Dakota...a Musical

Our next stop was at Fort Abraham Lincoln SP. We had a nice pull through on the end of a row with some privacy. There is a lot of history in this part of North Dakota related to this fort and the Indians that also lived in this part of the country. Near the fort was evidence of an Indian culture from the 1600's. The On a Slant Indians or Mandan Tribe. Their name was from the area where they made their village.

The On a Slant Indians built elaborate huts to protect them from the harsh winters of North Dakota.

Fort Abraham Lincoln was under the command of General George Custer before his fateful death by the Sioux Indians.
We were able to tour replicas of the barracks and a replica of the house he occupied at that time.

We took a walk on a bike path in Bismarck, ND and saw some interesting tribal sculptures

Before we left town we had to stop at a local brew pub to sample some beverages.

After our stop in Mandan at Fort Abraham Lincoln we moved further west near Medora, ND. We enjoyed a drive and some easy hiking around Theodore Roosevelt NP. The bison and prairie dogs were in great abundance.

I used my zoom to get this close up

Bison definitely command the road

Herds everywhere

We stopped in Medora for some sightseeing and dinner one evening. They have several nice cafes and steakhouses. We also had lunch one day at a pizza parlor in town.

The best part of our stop was tickets to the Medora Musical. Performed live and outside, under the Badlands sky in the 2,900-seat Burning Hills Amphitheatre, the show is dedicated to President Theodore Roosevelt's time in the Badlands and to the Spirit of the Old West.

We had seats at the top of the amphitheatre

The backdrop was the beautiful North Dakota hills and landscape. You can also pay an additional fee to attend a dinner prior to the entertainment. The show was well worth the admission and the talent and scenery were incredible. Would love to go back again some day.

The town of Medora is a bit of a tourist trap but well worth the time to walk around the small downtown and enjoy the history of President Theodore Roosevelt.

We thought about staying in the National Park campground however it was over 90 degrees each day, there would be no hook ups and the campground was very busy in August. We opted to stay a few miles outside of the area in an RV park with full hook ups and 50 amps to use both A/C's, making it easy to visit the NP and Medora.

A few more photos from a hike we did in Theodore Roosevelt NP as we toured the park.

We're getting closer to our stop at Glacier NP. We hear it's beyond description. Can't wait. We have a couple more stops for overnights near Glacier. Thanks for following along.
